Crews carefully prepare to remove first piece of twisted steel from collapsed Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE (AP) — Teams of engineers are working Saturday on the intricate process of cutting and lifting the first section of twisted steel from the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland,

The bridge crumpled into the Patapsco River on Tuesday after a massive cargo ship crashed into one of its main supports.

Crews are carefully measuring and cutting the steel from the broken bridge before attaching straps so it can be lifted onto a barge and floated away, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said Saturday.

Seven floating cranes — including a massive one capable of lifting 1,000 tons — 10 tugboats, nine barges, eight salvage vessels and five Coast Guard boats are on site in the water southeast of Baltimore.

Each movement affects what happens next and ultimately how long it will take to remove all the debris and reopen the ship channel and the blocked Port of Baltimore, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.

"I cannot stress enough how important today and the first movement of this bridge and of the wreckage is. This is going to be a remarkably complicated process," Moore said.

Undeterred by the chilly morning weather, longtime Baltimore resident Randy Lichtenberg and others took cellphones photos or just quietly looked at the broken pieces of the bridge, which including its steel trusses, weigh as much as 4,000 tons.

“I wouldn’t want to be in that water. It’s got to be cold. It’s a tough job," said Lichtenberg from a spot on the river called Sparrows Point.

The shock of waking up Tuesday morning to video of what he called an iconic part of the Baltimore skyline falling into the water has given way to sadness.

“It never hits you that quickly. It’s just unbelievable," Lichtenberg said. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

One of the first goals for crews on the water is to get a smaller auxiliary ship channel open so tugboats and other small barges can move freely. Crews also want to stabilize the site so divers can continue a search for four missing workers who are presumed dead.

Two workers were rescued from the water in the hours following the bridge collapse early Tuesday, and the bodies of two more were recovered from a pickup truck that fell and was submerged in the river. They had been filling potholes on the bridge and while police were able to stop vehicle traffic after the ship called in a mayday they could not get to the construction crew who were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

The crew of the cargo ship Dali, which is managed by Synergy Marine Group, remains on board with the debris from the bridge around it. They are safe and are being interviewed. They are keeping the ship running as they will be needed to get it out of the channel once more debris has been removed. The vessel is owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and was chartered by Danish shipping giant Maersk.

The collision and collapse appeared to be an accident that came after the ship lost power. Federal and state investigators are still trying to determine why.

Assuaging concern about possible pollution from the crash, Adam Ortiz, the Environmental Protection Agency’s mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator, said there was no indication in the water of active releases from the ship or materials hazardous to human health. REBUILDING

Officials are also trying to figure out how to handle the economic impact of a closed port and the severing of a major highway link. The bridge was completed in 1977 and carried Interstate 695 around southeast Baltimore.

Maryland transportation officials are planning to rebuild the bridge, promising to consider innovative designs or building materials to hopefully shorten a project that could take years.

President Joe Biden’s administration has approved $60 million in immediate aid and promised the federal government will pay the full cost to rebuild.

Ship traffic at the Port of Baltimore remains suspended, but the Maryland Port Administration said trucks were still being processed at marine terminals.

The loss of a road that carried 30,000 vehicles a day and the port disruption will affect not only thousands of dockworkers and commuters, but also U.S. consumers, who are likely to feel the impact of shipping delays. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other U.S. facility.

Dalal Street Week Ahead: RBI policy, auto sales, global PMI data among 10 key factors to watch

Overall, the first week ahead of the new financial year FY25 is expected to be positive for the market with focus on auto sales data, manufacturing & services PMI numbers, RBI interest rate decision, and expectations for March FY24 quarter earnings, experts said.

The market had a strong close for the truncated week ended on March 28, as the benchmark indices gained 1 percent with participation from most sectors barring IT after consolidation in previous couple of weeks. In fact, the monthly expiry session for March derivative contracts had a good rally, indicating the market may be inching towards a record high soon.

Overall, the first week ahead of the new financial year FY25 is expected to be positive for the market with focus on auto sales data, manufacturing & services PMI numbers, RBI interest rate decision, and expectations for March FY24 quarter earnings, experts said.

The Nifty 50 rallied 230 points to 22,327, and the BSE Sensex jumped 819 points to 73,651, while the broader markets had a better week than benchmarks as the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices gained 1.6 percent and 1.4 percent respectively.

"Overall, we expect the market to continue its positive momentum with a focus on large-cap. With the start of the election in April, we believe government-centric stocks to be in focus. Auto stocks are likely to be in the limelight next week amid the release of monthly auto sales numbers," Siddhartha Khemka, head - retail research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services said.

Japan’s SLIM moon lander survives another lunar night against all odds

Japan’s SLIM moon lander survives another lunar night against all odds

Japan's SLIM lander has survived two lunar nights despite landing in a less-than-favourable position.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on Thursday confirmed that its SLIM Moon lander survived two lunar nights without its instruments freezing. The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon launched in September last year and landed on the Moon on January 19. It was able to do something that ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 could not — not once but twice.

SLIM’s landing made Japan just the fifth country in the world to soft-land a spacecraft on the Moon after the United States, the Soviet Union, China and India. But it was not exactly a walk in the park — the 200 kilogram lander actually landed on its nose that day and it went dark shortly after since it was not in a great position for its solar panels to harvest sunlight. But it came back to life again on January 28, and it went on to gather science data.

Shortly after that, JAXA teams put the lander in hibernation mood ahead of its first lunar winter. SLIM had already succeeded with its main mission objectives — demonstrate a soft-landing, collect science data and deploy two small rovers. And it was expected that its instruments would not survive the harsh lunar night when temperatures can be below minus hundred degrees Celsius. But it survived the lunar night not once but twice, according to a JAXA post on X, formerly Twitter.

“According to the acquired data, some temperature sensors and unused battery cells are starting to malfunction, but the majority of functions that survived the first lunar night was maintained even after the second lunar night,” said a post shared by the agency on the platform.

Donald Trump assails judge and his daughter after gag order in New York hush-money criminal case

Donald Trump assails judge and his daughter after gag order in New York hush-money criminal case

Donald Trump objected in particular to what he said was her specious social media photo showing him behind bars.

Donald Trump lashed out on Wednesday at the New York judge who put him under a gag order ahead of his April 15 hush-money criminal trial, suggesting without evidence that the veteran jurist was kowtowing to his daughter's interests as a Democratic political consultant.

The former president objected in particular to what he said was her specious social media photo showing him behind bars.

Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, posted on social media that the gag order issued on Tuesday was “illegal, un-American, unConstitutional".

his company's books when they were for Cohen's work during the 2016 campaign covering up negative stories about Trump.

That included $130,000 Cohen paid Daniels on Trump's behalf so she wouldn't publicise her claim of a sexual encounter with him years earlier.

Trump pleaded not guilty last April to 34 counts of falsifying business records, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison, though there is no guarantee that a conviction would result in jail time. He denies having sex with Daniels and his lawyers have said that the payments to Cohen were legitimate legal expenses, not part of any coverup.

In issuing the gag order, Merchan cited Trump's history of “threatening, inflammatory, denigrating” remarks about people involved in his legal cases. A violation could result in Trump being held in contempt of court, fined or even jailed.

Though not covered by the restrictions, Merchan referenced Trump's various comments about him as an example of his rhetoric. The gag order mirrors one imposed and largely upheld by a federal appeals court panel in Trump's Washington, D.C., election interference criminal case.

Trump's lawyers fought a gag order, warning it would amount to unconstitutional and unlawful prior restraint on his free speech rights.

Merchan had long resisted imposing one, recognizing Trump's “special” status as a former president and current candidate and not wanting to trample his ability to defend himself publicly.

But, he said, as the trial nears, he found that his obligation to ensuring the integrity of the case outweighs First Amendment concerns. He said Trump's statements have induced fear and necessitated added security measures to protect his targets and investigate threats.

Buy Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra at Rs 89,999 on Flipkart

If you have been waiting for a while to drop the price of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, then this is the right time as the tech players have dropped the pricing of the device. The smartphone is available at a huge discounted price in India, making it way more affordable than ever before, by the time of writing.

Price: Before versus now
This is a high time when the price of the device drops down to as low as Rs 89,999. The device was originally priced at Rs 1,24,999 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variants, and it is now available at Rs 89,999 on Flipkart- which is a Rs 35,000 price cut on last year’s top-tier Galaxy phone.

Additional offers on Galaxy S23 Ultra
The e-commerce player has been further offering some additional bank offers which can enable the user to avail more thousand rupees. Those who are planning to buy the device could avail of additional discounts between Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000. By using certain credit cards from Axis Bank, ICICI and HSBC.

The smartphone is priced under a lakh and at such value, the device comes with the best camera capabilities and other hardware which are more or less similar to the two existing Ultra devices- S23 Ultra and Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The handset will further run on Samsung’s latest AI-powered One UI 6.1 operating system and will be coming to the Galaxy S23 series very soon with the new update (expected to roll out soon)- which will give a near-identical experience at under Rs 90,000 cost.

Flipkart and Samsung discounts
Flipkart has developed a bit of a reputation for some really good discounted devices for a while now. In January 2024, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra itself was listed at Rs 74,999- for which customers rushed to get their hands on the device but later, they had them cancelled, and later e-commerce offered a Rs 2,000 gift card as an apology.

The new price of Rs 89,999 for Galaxy S23 Ultra could be a great offer to grab and the offer looks legitimate this time.

Baltimore bridge collapse could impact global auto, coal supply chains

This comes close on the heels of major shipping disruption such as the Red Sea crisis and the drought in the Panama Canal that has already hit over one-third of the global goods trade at a time when WTO has predicted weak upward momentum in trade in 2024.

A general view shows the Francis Scott Key Bridge, as seen from the Baltimore side, following the bridge collapse, in Baltimore, Maryland.

The blockade of vessel traffic at the crucial Port of Baltimore in the US after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge on Tuesday could have a ripple effect chiefly on the global automotive vehicle and coal supply chain as operations at the port are expected to remain shut for months. However, experts have ruled out any direct impact on India’s trade.

Death toll in Moscow concert attack rises to 140 after another victim dies

Death toll in Moscow concert attack rises to 140 after another victim dies

A total of 80 people injured in the attack remain hospitalized, the official added, and 205 others have sought outpatient medical assistance.

The death toll from last week's Moscow concert hall attack rose to 140 on Wednesday after another victim died in a hospital, Russian officials said.

That person was one of five still hospitalized in extremely grave condition, and the doctors did everything they could to save them, Russia's Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said.

A total of 80 people injured in the attack remain hospitalized, the official added, and 205 others have sought outpatient medical assistance.

The Friday night massacre in Crocus City Hall, a sprawling shopping and entertainment venue on the northwestern outskirts of Moscow, was the deadliest terrorist attack on the Russian soil in nearly 20 years. At least four gunmen toting automatic rifles shot at thousands of concertgoers and set the venue on fire.

An affiliate of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the violence, while US intelligence said it had information confirming the group was responsible. French President Emmanuel Macron said France also has intelligence pointing to an IS entity as responsible for the attack.

Russia's Federal Security Service, or the FSB, said it had arrested 11 people the day after the attack, including four suspected gunmen. The four men, identified as Tajik nationals, appeared in a Moscow court on Sunday on terrorism charges and showed signs of severe beatings. One appeared to be barely conscious during the hearing. ALSO READ: Russia blames Ukraine for concert attack despite its denial, Isis claim

Russian officials, however, have insisted Ukraine and the West had a role, claims Kyiv vehemently denies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, of trying to drum up fervor as his forces fight in Ukraine.

FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov also alleged that Western spy agencies could have been involved. We believe that radical Islamists prepared the action, while Western special services assisted it and Ukrainian special services had a direct part in it, Bortnikov said, without giving details.

He repeated Putin's claim that the four gunmen were trying to escape to Ukraine when they were arrested, casting it as proof of Kyiv's alleged involvement.

But that assertion was undercut slightly by Belarus' authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko, who said Tuesday the suspects were headed for Ukraine because they feared tight controls on the Belarus border.

The Islamic State group, which lost much of its territory following Russia's military action in Syria after 2015, has long targeted Russia. In October 2015, a bomb planted by IS downed a Russian jetliner over the Sinai desert, killing all 224 people aboard, most of them Russian vacationers returning from Egypt.

The group, which operates mainly in Syria and Iraq but also in Afghanistan and Africa, also has claimed several attacks in Russia's volatile Caucasus and other regions in the past years. It has recruited fighters from Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union.

On Monday, Putin warned that more attacks could follow, alleging possible Western involvement. He didn't mention the warning about a possible imminent terrorist attack that the US shared confidentially with Moscow two weeks before the raid.

Three days before the attack, Putin denounced the US Embassy's March 7 notice urging Americans to avoid crowds in Moscow, including concerts, calling it an attempt to frighten Russians and blackmail the Kremlin ahead of the presidential election.

Bortnikov said Russia was thankful for the warning but described it as very general.

Trump barred from attacking jurors and witnesses in hush money case as judge issues gag order

Trump barred from attacking jurors and witnesses in hush money case as judge issues gag order

A New York judge Tuesday issued a gag order barring Donald Trump from commenting publicly about witnesses and prosecutors in hush-money criminal trial.

A New York judge Tuesday issued a gag order barring Donald Trump from commenting publicly about witnesses, prosecutors, court staff and jurors in his upcoming hush-money criminal trial, citing the former president's history of “threatening, inflammatory, denigrating" remarks about people involved in his legal cases.

Judge Juan M. Merchan's decision, echoing a gag order in Trump’s Washington, D.C., election interference criminal case, came a day after he rejected the defense's push to delay the Manhattan trial until summer

Judge Juan M. Merchan's decision, echoing a gag order in Trump’s Washington, D.C., election interference criminal case, came a day after he rejected the defense's push to delay the Manhattan trial until summer and ordered it to begin April 15. If the date holds, it will be the first criminal trial of a former president.

“Given that the eve of trial is upon us, it is without question that the imminency of the risk of harm is now paramount,” Merchan wrote in a four-page decision granting the prosecution's request for what it deemed a “narrowly tailored” gag order.

The judge said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee's statements have induced fear and necessitated added security measures to protect his targets and investigate threats

Trump's lawyers fought a gag order, warning it would amount to unconstitutional and unlawful prior restraint on his free speech rights. Merchan, who had long resisted imposing a gag order, said his obligation to ensuring the integrity of the trial outweighed First Amendment concerns.

“President Trump’s political opponents have, and will continue to, attack him based on this case,” Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Susan Necheles said in a recent court filing. “The voters have the right to listen to President Trump’s unfettered responses to those attacks — not just one side of that debate.”

The gag order bars Trump from either making or directing other people to make public statements on his behalf about potential witnesses and jurors in the hush-money trial. It also prohibits any statements meant to interfere with or harass the court’s staff, prosecution team or their families.

It does not bar comments about Merchan, whom Trump has referred to after his arraignment last year as “a Trump-hating judge” with a family full of “Trump haters," or Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, an elected Democrat. But it puts Trump on notice that attacks on key figures in the case, like his former lawyer-turned-nemesis Michael Cohen or porn star Stormy Daniels, won't be tolerated.

A violation could result in Trump being held in contempt of court, fined or even jailed.

“I want to thank Judge Merchan for imposing the gag order as I have been under relentless assault from Donald’s MAGA supporters," said Cohen, a key prosecution witness against Trump. "Nevertheless, knowing Donald as well as I do, he will seek to defy the gag order by employing others within his circle to do his bidding, regardless of consequence.”
Blanche declined to comment. Bragg's office also declined to comment. A message seeking comment was left for Trump's presidential campaign.

The gag order adds to existing restrictions that prohibit Trump from using evidence in the case to attack witnesses.

Trump's hush-money case centers on allegations that he falsely logged payments to Cohen, then his personal lawyer, as legal fees in his company’s books when they were for his work during the 2016 campaign covering up negative stories about Trump. That included $130,000 he had paid Daniels on Trump's behalf so she wouldn’t publicize her claim of a sexual encounter with him years earlier.

At his arraignment, Merchan admonished Trump not to make statements that could incite violence or jeopardize safety, but stopped short of muzzling him. At a subsequent hearing, Merchan noted Trump’s “special” status as a former president and current candidate and said, “I’m bending over backwards and straining to make sure that he is given every opportunity possible to advance his candidacy and to be able to speak in furtherance of his candidacy.”

As jury selection nears, Merchan has been increasingly wary of Trump's rhetoric disrupting the historic trial. Earlier this month, Merchan ruled to keep the names of jurors from the public. Trump will have access to them, but he risks forfeiting access if he discloses the names publicly or engages in harassing or disruptive conduct that threatens the safety or integrity of jurors, the judge said.

Now, with the gag order, Merchan is declaring scores of people involved in the case off-limits for Trump's social media venom, courthouse diatribes and campaign rallies. Trump's grousing to TV cameras as he entered and exited the courtroom became ritual during his New York civil fraud trial last year.

After leaving Monday's hearing where Merchan set the trial date, Trump tore into prosecutor Matthew Colangelo at a press conference, referring to the ex-Justice Department official as a “radical left from DOJ” sent to run the Trump case "by Biden and his thugs.” The judge cited those remarks in his ruling.

Trump has repeatedly lashed out about the hush-money case. He warned on social media of “potential death & destruction” before his indictment last year and posting a photo on social media of himself holding a baseball bat next to a picture of Bragg. He has referred to Cohen as a “convicted felon, disbarred lawyer, with zero credibility” and has used a mocking nickname to describe Daniels.

Merchan is just the latest judge to put guardrails around Trump.

A federal appeals court panel in December largely upheld Trump's gag order in his Washington, D.C., election interference case but narrowed it by freeing him to criticize special counsel Jack Smith, who brought the case. The New York gag order echoed that ruling by excluding Bragg.

At the fraud trial, Trump was fined $15,000 for twice violating a gag order imposed after he made a disparaging social media post about the judge’s chief law clerk.

In January, a federal judge threatened Trump with expulsion from court in a civil trial on writer E. Jean Carroll’s defamation claims against him after he was heard saying “it is a witch hunt” and “it really is a con job."

Good Friday 2024: Know date, history and significance of the Christian holiday

The Service of the Great Three Hours’ Agony on Good Friday is held from noon until 3 pm, corresponding to the time duration that the Bible records as darkness covering the land during Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross

On Good Friday, Jesus Christ was crucified by Roman soldiers on charges of blasphemy from the religious leaders

Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, or Black Friday.

Observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum, Good Friday is a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting.

The Paschal Triduum is the period of three days that begins with Maundy Thursday (last Supper of Jesus Christ), reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday.

Members of many Christian denominations, including the Catholic, and the Eastern Orthodox, observe Good Friday with fasting and church services.

The "Service of the Great Three Hours’ Agony" is held from noon until 3 pm, corresponding to the time duration that the Bible records as darkness covering the land during Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross.

Good Friday 2024: Date
Historically, Good Friday falls between March 20 and April 23. This year, Good Friday will be observed on March 29 (Friday).

History of Good Friday
On Good Friday, Jesus Christ was crucified by Roman soldiers on charges of blasphemy from the religious leaders. According to the biblical record, his death was a sacrifice meant to absorb sins and allow the followers to reenter relationship with God, his Father.

Why is crucifixion of Jesus Christ called ‘Good Friday’?
The crucifixion of Jesus Christ, for Christians, represents the ultimate sacrifice made for the forgiveness of the sins of humanity.

His death is believed to have provided a way for believers to have eternal life, opening the way for salvation and reconciliation between God and humanity.

Things to do on Good Friday:
🔸Wake up early on Good Friday and prepare for the day of sacrifice.

🔸It is suggested to wear black, symbolizing mourning.

🔸As it is a day of mourning, try to limit consumption of television, phones, and social media.

🔸As required by the Church, observe obligatory day of fasting and abstinence.

🔸Attend prayer service for Good Friday.

🔸At the 'Great Three Hours’ Agony', noon to 3:00 pm, observe silence.

🔸Venerate the holy cross in your home or the Church

Many Questions’: Putin Acknowledges Jihadist Role In Moscow Terror Attack But Implies Ukraine Played A Part

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Moscow attack was carried out by Islamists but said it was to the benefit of Ukraine.

Russian President Putin said the Moscow terror attacks benefited Ukraine as Russian authorities detained (from top left to bottom) Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni, Isroil Islomov and (from top right to bottom) Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Muhammadsobir Fayzov and Aminchon Islomov

Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that the attack on the concert hall in suburban Moscow was carried out by Islamic militants on Monday but suggested that it benefitted Ukraine and that Kyiv may have played a role.

He said 11 people had been detained, including the four suspected gunmen, who he said had made their way to the Bryansk region and tried to slip into Ukraine.

In the deadliest attack inside Russia for two decades, four men burst into the Crocus City Hall on Friday night, spraying bullets during a concert by the Soviet-era rock group Piknik.

The Russian President said that the motive of the attack was to ‘sow panic’ among Russian citizens and could also be intended to “show their own population that not all is lost for the Kyiv regime", in a reference to Ukraine .

Alexander Bastrykin, head of Russia’s Investigative Committee, told the Kremlin meeting the death toll had risen to 139, with 182 people wounded.

“We know that the crime was carried out by the hand of radical Islamists with an ideology that the Muslim world has fought for centuries. The question that arises is who benefits from this?" Putin asked, according to the report by Reuters.

“This atrocity may be just a link in a whole series of attempts by those who have been at war with our country since 2014 by the hands of the neo-Nazi Kyiv regime. We know by whose hand the crime against Russia and its people was committed. But what is of interest to us is who ordered it," he further added, while speaking at a meeting held after the attack to discuss measures taken in response to the attack.

Meanwhile, France joined the US in saying intelligence indicated Islamic State was responsible.

The US earlier said that it warned Russia under the ‘duty to warn’ protocol about an imminent attack and that intelligence indicates an Afghan affiliate, Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K), was responsible.

Moscow’s Basmanny district court remanded four men of Tajik origin on terrorism charges on suspicion of carrying out the attack. Three men were remanded in custody on suspicion of complicity. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack and has released what it says is footage from the massacre.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy derided Putin’s comments in his nightly video address, saying that for the Kremlin leader “everyone is a terrorist, except himself, though he has been thriving on terror for two decades."

When he is gone, the need for terror and violence will disappear with him," Zelenskiy said.

Ukraine has denied any role in Friday’s shooting and Zelenskiy has accused Putin of seeking to divert blame.

‘Ear Cut, Stuffed Into Mouth’
Unverified videos of interrogations on social media showed one of the perpetrators ear cut off and stuffed into his mouth. Detained Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, leaned against a glass cage as the terrorism charge was read out. Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, his ear in bandages, remained sitting.

New Zealand accuses China of hacking its parliament, terms it ‘unacceptable’

“Foreign interference of this nature is unacceptable, and we have urged China to refrain from such activity in future,” New Zealand's Foreign Minister said

The New Zealand government said it had raised concerns on Tuesday with the Chinese government about its involvement in a state-sponsored cyber hack on New Zealand's parliament in 2021, which was uncovered by the country’s intelligence services.

The New Zealand government said it had raised concerns on Tuesday with the Chinese government about its involvement in a state-sponsored cyber hack on New Zealand's parliament in 2021, which was uncovered by the country’s intelligence services.(

The revelations that information was accessed through malicious cyber activity targeting New Zealand’s parliamentarian entities comes as Britain and the U.S. accuse China of a widesweeping cyber espionage campaign. Both New Zealand and Australia have condemned the broader activity

Foreign interference of this nature is unacceptable, and we have urged China to refrain from such activity in future,” New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters said in a statement.

He said concerns about cyber activity attributed to groups sponsored by the Chinese government, targeting democratic institutions in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom had been conveyed to the Chinese ambassador.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand said in an email that they reject "outright such groundless and irresponsible accusations" and have expressed their dissatisfaction and resolute opposition with New Zealand authorities.

"We have never, nor will we in the future, interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, including New Zealand. Accusing China of foreign interference is completely barking up the wrong tree," the spokesperson said.

The government said earlier on Tuesday its communications security bureau (GCSB), which overseas cyber security and signals intelligence, had established links between a Chinese state-sponsored actor known as Advanced Persistent Threat 40 (APT40) and malicious cyber activity targeting New Zealand's parliamentary services and parliamentary counsel office in 2021.

The GCSB said APT40 is affiliated with the Ministry of State Security.

It added APT40 had gained access to important information that enables the effective operation of New Zealand government but nothing of a sensitive or strategic nature had not been removed. Instead, the GCSB said it believed the group had removed information of a more technical nature that would have allowed more intrusive activity.

In the last financial year, 23% of the 316 malicious cyber events that involved nationally significant organisations were attributed to state-sponsored actors, according to the GCSB.

These attacks were not specifically attributed to China and New Zealand last year also condemned malicious cyber activity undertaken by the Russian government.

“The use of cyber-enabled espionage operations to interfere with democratic institutions and processes anywhere is unacceptable,” said Judith Collins, the minister responsible for the GCSB.

U.S. and British officials late on Monday filed charges, imposed sanctions, and accused Beijing of a sweeping cyber espionage campaign that allegedly hit millions of people including lawmakers, academics and journalists, and companies including defence contractors.
American and British officials nicknamed the hacking group responsible Advanced Persistent Threat 31 or "APT31", calling it an arm of China's Ministry of State Security. Officials reeled off a laundry list of targets: White House staffers, U.S. senators, British parliamentarians, and government officials across the world who criticized Beijing. Defence contractors, dissidents and security companies were also hit, officials from the two countries said.

A joint statement from Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said persistent targeting of democratic institutions and processes has implications for democratic and open societies like Australia. It said this behaviour is unacceptable and must stop.

In 2019, Australian intelligence determined China was responsible for a cyber-attack on its national parliament and three largest political parties before the general election but the Australian government never disclosed officially who was behind the attacks.

Trump's deadline to pay $464m bond in fraud case just hours away

Trump's deadline to pay $464m bond in fraud case just hours away

Donald Trump has just a few hours left to prevent the seizure of his assets in a business fraud case that threatens his fabled property empire.

A deadline for him to put up the $464m (£365m) penalty for inflating his net worth is due to expire on Monday.

If he fails to either secure a bond or delay the process in court, the authorities in New York can freeze his bank accounts or target his properties.

A separate legal threat to the former president also takes shape later.

He may be given a date for his first criminal trial at a hearing in New York in the so-called hush money case involving adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Mr Trump is expected to attend in person to hear his lawyers argue the case should be dismissed due to the recent disclosure of thousands of documents about a key witness.

In the fraud case, he may yet receive a lifeline from a New York appeals court which is considering his application for a stay on the judgement.

Trump needs a $464m bond. What if he can't get it?
What happened between Stormy Daniels and Trump?
Last week his lawyers said he had been unable to cover the penalty despite approaching numerous financial companies to provide a bond.

To secure a bond, an individual has to demonstrate to the company providing the guarantee that they have enough liquidity, usually in the form of cash or stocks.

If Mr Trump secured a bond on Monday it would protect his assets while he continues his appeal.

However, if he fails to do so, his bank accounts could be immediately frozen.

New York Attorney General Letitia James would just need to send restraining notices to his banks and brokerage firms.

"That's easy and quick," Randy Zelin, an adjunct law professor from Cornell Law School, told the BBC. "As soon as the bank gets that restraining notice they will shut those accounts down."

The next step would be a turnover notice signed by a judge sent to the banks and brokerage firms, at which point they hand over the money.

The time between the two notices would depend on how fast the prosecutor's office wants to work, said Mr Zelin. It could be just a few days.

Mr Trump could yet find the money through other means. On Friday he claimed on social media that he possessed almost $500m in cash.

A New York judge ordered him to pay the penalty for falsely inflating his assets to secure better loans. His sons were also order to pay financial penalties.

Ms James gave a 30-day grace period from the ruling to give Mr Trump time to find the money. That expires on Monday.

She has previously said she is prepared to take Mr Trump's assets if he does not pay on time.

The many lives of Trump Tower
She recently filed the fraud judgement with clerks in Westchester County, an indication she might try to take property in New York City's northern suburbs.

Mr Trump owns Seven Springs, a golf course and 212-acre estate, in that area.

Also at risk are Mr Trump's prized New York properties, including the 58-floor Trump Tower, and even his assets in Florida, including his Mar-a-Lago club.

According to a Forbes estimate, Mr Trump is worth about $2.6bn. He testified last year that he had $400m in liquid assets.

The $464m judgement is not his only expense. He was ordered to pay $83m in January after losing a defamation case to E Jean Carroll, a woman he was found to have sexually abused. He has already posted a bond in that case.

He is the first former president in US history to be criminally charged and faces dozens of charges across four separate cases.

The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a negative start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 22,120 level, a discount of nearly 40 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close.

The Indian stock market indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are expected to open lower on Tuesday following mixed global market cues.

The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a negative start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 22,120 level, a discount of nearly 40 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close.

This is a holiday truncated week and the trading volumes are expected to be lower with limited market cues. However, volatility may remain high as we approach the March F&O expiry and the financial year-end.

On Friday, the domestic equity benchmarks closed higher for the third consecutive session.

The Sensex gained 190.75 points to close at 72,831.94, while the Nifty 50 settled 84.80 points, or 0.39%, higher at 22,096.75.

Nifty 50 formed a reasonable positive candle on the daily chart with a minor upper shadow.

“The market is facing strong resistance around 22,200 - 22,300 levels and a decisive break above this hurdle could open the next round of sharp upmove in the market. The Nifty on the weekly chart formed a small positive candle with a long lower shadow. The weekly support of the 10-week EMA (Exponential Moving Average) has been regained after the intra-week downside violation at 21,950. This is a positive indication," said Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst, HDFC Securities.

He believes the short-term trend of Nifty remains positive. A sharp move above the hurdle of 22,200 - 22,300 levels could pull Nifty towards new all time highs around 22,550 levels.

Here’s what to expect from Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty today:

Nifty OI Data

According to Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd, options data shows some improvement, with the put-to-call ratio rising from oversold levels to 1.23.

“However, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) maintain a high level of short exposure in index futures, currently at 65%. This elevated short positioning suggests there’s still potential for a short-covering rally," Meena said.

Rahul Ghose, CEO, Hedged.in noted that the Bank Nifty index was seen having massive put writing all the way from 46,000 up to the 47,000 strike

The bullish bias in fact is seen right up to the April expiry where April ITM or In the money put writing was seen on Friday. Nifty on the other hand continues to be in a small range as per Open Interest (OI) data with the next move happening only above the 22,300 mark or below the 21,700 mark on the downside," Ghose said.

Nifty 50 Prediction

The Nifty 50 index continued with its follow-through up move on March 22 and closed the day higher by 84 points amidst volatility.

“Nifty witnessed two days of recovery following a doji formation on the daily chart, indicating a bullish reversal. Moreover, the Nifty has reclaimed the critical 55-day exponential moving average. However, Nifty needs to cross over 22,100 to witness a clear rally towards the all-time high of 22,525," said Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst, LKP Securities.

On the lower end, 22,950 might remain a strong support for the index. Below this level, the index might enter a consolidation phase, he added.

Bank Nifty Prediction

The Bank Nifty index rose 179 points to settle at 46,864 on March 22.

“The Bank Nifty index saw robust buying from lower levels but struggled to breach the resistance at 47,000. Immediate support lies at 46,600-46,500, and as long as the index holds above this level, the outlook remains bullish. A breakthrough above 47,000 is anticipated to trigger sharp short-covering rallies towards the 48,000 mark," De said.

Donald Trump gets lifeline in $454 million fraud case, 'hush money' trial set for April 15 as court slashes bond amount

A New York state appeals court slashed a potentially crippling $454 million bond payment due on Monday to $175 million and gave the former president 10 extra days to pay.

Donald Trump's legal battles pinballed from victory to defeat Monday as he was offered a lifeline in his struggle to stave off a half billion dollar fraud judgement while a New York judge rejected efforts to delay a separate criminal trial.

A New York state appeals court slashed a potentially crippling $454 million bond payment due on Monday to $175 million and gave the former president 10 extra days to pay.

The Republican presidential candidate got the unexpectedly positive news about his New York civil fraud case while he was sitting in court for another case -- a hearing in his upcoming criminal trial over paying hush money to a porn star.

Judge Juan Merchan rejected demands from Trump's lawyers to delay the first ever criminal trial of a former president for at least 90 days and ordered jury selection to begin on April 15.

Trump faces charges of falsifying business records for the payments made on the eve of the 2016 presidential election to make sure porn star Stormy Daniels did not publicize a sexual encounter.

"You are literally accusing the Manhattan (District Attorney's) office and the people assigned to this case of prosecutorial misconduct and trying to make me complicit in it," a visibly exasperated Merchan told Trump's attorneys during the hearing in a Manhattan courtroom.
Trump had also been facing a Monday deadline to pay the huge original bond pending an appeal against a judge's decision that he is liable for fraudulently conspiring to inflate his net worth.

Trump made clear he was unable to find the $454 million and he risked seeing New York state confiscate parts of his property empire if he failed to come up with the bond.

The 77-year-old Trump welcomed the appellate panel ruling while denouncing the hush money case as "election interference" and a "witch hunt."

"I greatly respect the decision of the appellate division and I will post $175 million in cash and bonds or security or whatever is necessary, very quickly, within the 10 days," he told reporters.

The hush money trial had been scheduled to begin on Monday but was delayed because thousands of pages of potential evidence were belatedly produced by prosecutors.

On Truth Social, Trump denounced both cases as a politically motivated attack ahead of the November 5 presidential election when he will likely again face incumbent Democrat Joe Biden.

"These are Rigged cases, all coordinated by the White House and DOJ for purposes of Election Interference," Trump wrote. "No crime. Our Country is CORRUPT!"

Lok Sabha Election 2024: A worker sorts Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) flags at a BJP election office in Chennai on March 16, 2024, during preparations ahead of the Election Commission India (ECI) schedule announcement India's upcoming general election

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday released an additional 111 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections..

According to the list, union ministers Ashwini Kumar Choubey and V K Singh, along with MP Varun Gandhi, were omitted from the list. Instead, the party nominated actors Kangana Ranaut and Arun Govil.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will vie for the Sambalpur seat, while the party's spokesperson, Sambit Patra, will make another attempt from Puri after narrowly missing out in 2019.

However, the BJP has decided not to field former Union minister Anantkumar Hegde, who has served six terms as a Lok Sabha member from Uttara Kannada, in the upcoming elections. Known for his staunch Hindutva stance, Hegde has frequently sparked controversies with his statements, including a recent remark advocating for a significant BJP mandate to amend the Constitution.

In the latest list of candidates, the BJP has refrained from granting tickets to approximately 37 sitting Members of Parliament, with nine being from Uttar Pradesh, five from Gujarat, four from Odisha, and three each from Bihar, Karnataka, and Jharkhand.

The tally of incumbent MPs not receiving tickets does not encompass individuals who have recently won assembly elections, such as Diya Kumari and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in Rajasthan, or those like Nayab Singh Saini, who assumed office as Haryana chief minister, and Brijendra Singh, who has already resigned from the party.

Several leaders who switched from other parties to join the BJP have been nominated, including industrialist Naveen Jindal and Varaprasad Rao, who were formally inducted mere hours before the candidate list was unveiled. Additionally, figures like Sita Soren, Tapas Roy, and N Kiran Kumar Reddy have also been rewarded with tickets.

The latest list includes three leaders who joined the BJP on Sunday: Naveen Jindal from Kurukshetra, Haryana government minister Ranjit Chautala from Hisar (both in Haryana), and Varaprasad Rao from Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.

With the addition of these 111 candidates, the ruling party has now named a total of 398 nominees for the elections to the 543-member Lok Sabha, excluding the four candidates who withdrew their names following controversies.
